Jade Brush Holder

Jade Brush Holder

1981 Gift of Ruth Maxwell Johnson in memory of Louis Johnson

The dark green jade of this brush holder was highly prized in China. The surface is decorated with a carved scene where scholars, court figures and attendants are engaged in various activites. Two of the figures are seated at tables, painting or practicing calligraphy. One figure is playing an instrument while a kneeling attendant fans a fire under a pot. The figures are depicted in a setting of pine, bamboo and rocks. Clouds circle the rim of the piece. The brush holder rests upon a carved wood base.
