Grandma

Savage, Lee

Grandma

acrylic & pencil on wood

1974 Purchase

The career of Charleston native, Lee Savage, spanned several decades. His work is included in the collections of some of the most prominent museums in the country. His portraits, with faded color and blurred lines, often possess a touch of wit. "Grandma" is characteristic of Savage's skillful treatment of the human figure and his ability to capture the character of his subject. Savage tended to eliminate details of the subject's environment, focusing on the subject instead. "Grandma" was purchased after Savage had his first solo exhibition in West Virginia at Sunrise Museum in 1974.
